Inside this Gorgeous Chef-Style Historic Kitchen Remodel
Building type: Rowhome
Renovation style: Traditional
This remodel was completed for a wonderful client who is also a Philadelphia trained chef. For this chef-style kitchen, our goal was to create an updated kitchen that fit the design and character of this 1930's Philadelphia home. Our design-build plans included structural work to open the kitchen area up to the central stair, foyer and living room, which involved a reconfiguration of the stairwell and railing.
Our client's goals were to create a chef-style kitchen on a budget while maintaining a functional working triangle. After we completed her kitchen remodel, she was more than happy to share these thoughts with us, “I am filled with joy every time I enter my home and gaze into my beautiful kitchen; simply STUNNING!”
Challenges when Updating an Older Philadelphia Home
Not only did the Bellweather team need to design a kitchen that had enough storage and working surfaces for this experienced cook, but we also needed to create a space that fit this client's lifestyle for everyday use. Our biggest challenge came when we opened up the kitchen to the rest of the first floor. Our construction team needed to correct some of the plumbing conditions from the original home. “Everyone, including Project Manager, Designer, Contractors, and Assistants showed extreme professionalism towards myself and my home” said the overjoyed client.
We were also working around the client while she lived in the home. Although this is always a worthy challenge for our team, we deeply appreciated her flexibility - the challenge of living in a home without a kitchen months, especially during a pandemic with social distancing orders in place! Luckily our client planned ahead with homemade frozen meals that lasted her almost the entire project. Now that is planning!
We are happy to say that all of these challenges were well worth it, especially after seeing the look on our client's face when she walked into the newly finished kitchen for the first time!
This kitchen was filled with unique materials and features throughout the building process. We installed quartz counters because of their beauty and easy maintenance. Light gray shaker cabinets provided a softening tone, providing a bright, reflective surface without feeling like a cold, all white kitchen.
Another hurdle our design-build team needed to overcome were the home's new windows, installed one year before our project began. In order to maintain the window locations, our design team worked around them in an effort to update the layout while saving our client's budget. While this was a worthy hurdle, it did require a couple of tricky counter design details. Nonetheless, the end result turned out beautifully because it was well planned!
During the design-build process, especially when there are bumps in the road, we always encourage our clients to be fully transparent with us. "Whenever I had questions or concerns regarding possible changes, the staff were considerate and helpful in making decisions." said the owner of this beautiful kitchen. And for the highest honor; our client told us, "It is such a pleasure to do business with a company that values its customer’s complete satisfaction! Thank you so much for providing me with my dream kitchen!”, which of course is why we are here.
