Children's Bedroom Loft
Location: Narberth, PA
Building type: 2 story Bungalow
Renovation style: Creative Themed Attic Conversion
This special request for a themed bedroom was one of our favorite projects to design and construct. There's nothing quite like making a ten year-old really smile. The house was in Narberth, PA a cute and desirable, small-town neighborhood outside of Philadelphia with small homes and smaller bedrooms.
A Themed Kids Bedroom That Magically Expands into an Attic
Our clients needed a larger bedroom for their growing son, a die-hard Phillies fan and little league player. The trouble was, the bedroom was tight with barely enough room to walk around the bed. He had just about run out of space to hang his achievement awards. During design exploration, our team worked with Mom to work through the baseball theme elements and more importantly, the geometry of the space. We were looking for any under-used areas in and around the bedroom that we could open up and incorporate. Luckily, there was an unfinished 3rd floor attic above his bedroom and we had the opportunity to loft the space and position his bed right over the adjacent bathroom. This kept most of the ceiling space open since the bed was offset from the original bedroom. Magic! The room became much bigger than the original footprint with very little effort!
We broke through the existing 8-foot ceiling to create a vaulted ceiling and added back in stained cedar collar ties to provide necessary structure. We re-framed the attic enclosure to accommodate his new lofted bed on top of the adjacent bathroom, added insulation and finished the safety rail using mini-baseball bats and stadium rope!
